UNIX and its Linux variant have played a dominant role in the Web server market for many years, only recently being challenged by Windows NT/2000/XP. UNIX, in various proprietary flavors, has long served the upper end of the market. The Linux variant is also known as a robust operating system capable of running critical 24×7 services; it is now supported by the major computer vendors, including IBM, and it can be obtained at little or no cost. Low cost software, such as the widely used Apache server, complete the picture. This report examines how to set up a Linux or UNIX-based server.
